Ellen Wiles

Ellen Wiles is a writer who loves exploring different forms, fields, and cultures. She is a novelist, anthropologist, and curator, as well as a Lecturer in Creative Writing. In previous lives she has worked as a human rights barrister and as a busker, in a refugee camp in Thailand, and with displaced Bushmen in Botswana.

Ellen’s first novel, The Invisible Crowd (Harper Collins, 2017) was awarded a Victor Turner Prize. Her first book, Saffron Shadows and Salvaged Scripts: Literary Life in Myanmar Under Censorship and in Transition (Columbia University Press, 2015) was the first to explore this literary culture through interviews and translations. Her new book, Live Literature: The Experience and Cultural Value of Literary Performance Events from Salons to Festivals (Palgrave, 2021), uses literary ethnography to explore participant experience, and has been described as ‘groundbreaking’, ‘stylish’, and ‘compelling’.

Ellen is the founder of Ark: an experimental live literature performance project. She is a regular book reviewer for The TLS, and enjoys writing essays and articles as well as fiction. She regularly speaks and performs at festivals and other events and appears in the media. At Exeter, she has founded ‘The Hexagon’: a video podcast; and ‘Speaking of Writing’: an event series featuring women writers of colour.
